Excellence in School Sport Programme

The vision for the Excellence in School Sport Programme (ESSP) is to provide a co-ordinated and planned approach to high quality support services for talented and aspiring West Lothian sporting pupils. The programme aims to support our most talented athletes to achieve their full potential through a tailored programme to develop and support each athlete. We also look for our talented sports pupils to assist in inspiring other pupils and to help create a strong and vibrant sporting ethos within their schools and the wider authority.

Experts in support services such as Strength & Conditioning and sports psychology deliver the programme with guidance from the appropriate governing bodies of sport, sportscotland Institute of Sport Network and West Lothian Council's Active Schools & Community Sport Team.

ESSP is supported by a number of partners, with Athlete Screening, Strength & Conditioning and Injury Prevention services provided by Personal Best Fitness.

Athlete Screening/Physiotherapy

Athlete Screening is used in ESSP in an effort to effectively prevent and identify potential musculoskelatal conditions. Our partners will look at an athlete's gait/biomechanics, posture, flexibility, core strength and balance. This information is used to help our Strength & Conditioning Team focus the athlete's individual training programme and to train in a way that promotes injury prevention.

Sport Psychology

Athletes who have sport psychology identified as a need will be put in contact with our Sport Psychologist who can provide support in dealing with common issues such as pre-game nerves, confidence and mental toughness through a series of individual consultations covering topics such as performance profiling, goal-setting, observation and feedback and individual performance analysis. Role Modelling

ESSP athletes are expected to be role models within their schools which means that they lead by example in the class room and in P.E., that they have an involvement in extra curricular and school sport competition and that they help their school to support and promote sport.
