Excellence in School Sport Programme
The vision for the Excellence in School Sport Programme (ESSP) is to provide a co-ordinated and planned approach to high quality sports coaching and support services for talented and aspiring West Lothian pupils. ESSP is delivered during curricular and extra curricular school, as part of a balanced curriculum. The programme aims to help our most talented sporting pupils to achieve their full potential through a tailored programme to develop and support each athlete. We also hope that our talented sports pupils can assist to aspire other pupils and help create a strong and vibrant sporting ethos within secondary schools.

ESSP is supported by a number of partners. Athlete Screening, Strength and Conditioning and Injury Prevention services are provided by Personal Best Fitness
Athlete Screening is used in ESSP in an effort to effectively prevent and identify potential musculoskelatal conditions. Our partners will look at an athlete's gait/biomechanics, posture, flexibility, core strength and balance. This information is used to help our Strength and Conditioning Team focus the athlete's individual training programme. They also provide injury prevention workshops where ESSP athlete's will learn techniques and information that will help them avoid injury where possible and how to train and recover from injury.
Athletes who have sport psychology identifed as a need will be put in contact with our Sport Psychologist who can provide support in dealing with common issues such as pre-game nerves, confidence and mental toughness through a series of individual consultations covering topics such as performance profiling, goal-setting, observation and feedback and individual performance analysis. ESSP athletes are expected to be role models within their schools and give aspiring younger athletes someone to look up to. This is celebrated annually at the Celebrating Sport Awards ceremony through the presentation of the William Tevendale Excellence in School Sport Award for Role Modelling where athletes are nominated for volunteer work which may include assisting in P.E and after school clubs, youth sections or additional coaching delivery out with their personal training and competing.
