Active Schools work closely with key partners, including community clubs and other organisations, to provide a wide range of high quality opportunities connected to physical education, school sport and club sport.

Active Schools work closely with a variety of partner organisiations to coordinate various programmes that run throughout primary and secondary schools in West Lothian. Please click on the links below for more information on some of these lead programmes:

Clubgolf - Active Schools provide training opportunities for volunteers to be able to deliver the Firstclubgolf programme to primary aged children. They also liaise with local golf clubs and schools to coordinate further training and development opportunities for young people.

CPD Calendar - Active Schools coordinate a year round programme of training and development opportunities for school staff and volunteers.

Active Girls - Active Schools work with schools and the community to ensure programmes that are delivered are also including girls and young women. The Active Girls programme aims to deliver the following four outcomes:

  • Increased opportunities for girls and young women to participate in sport and physical activity
  • Improved access to leadership opportunities and roles for girls and young women in school and community sport
  • Greater recognition of the power of girls to motivate and inspire their peers and more opportunities to do so
  • Enhanced knowledge and understanding of workforce delivering PE, sport and physical activity to girls and young women

Living for Sport - This initiative run by SKY Sports uses sports stars and skills learnt through sport to build confidence and develop life skills. Active Schools Coordinators can support the schools in organising athlete visits and then provide opportunities for the pupils to utilise their new leadership skills at cluster and authority wide events.

Primary School Festivals - Every year, each Active Schools Coordinator plans a festival calendar of events for pupils from all of their cluster primary schools to take part in. The festivals are often run with the support of local clubs to help build pathways and enable children to pursue the sport further should they wish to.

Secondary School Competition - West Lothian's School Sport Partnership (SSP) was created to ensure an integrated approach to the development and delivery of high quality physical education, physical activity and school sport in West Lothian, supporting a structured pathway from participation to competition and through to performance. The School Sport Coordinator leads on a comprehensive calendar of sporting events for secondary schools to participate in throughout the year.

Sports Leader Programme - Some secondary schools choose to deliver a Sports Leaders qualification to senior pupils in school, with other schools following similar leadership programmes which enable the young people to develop valuable leadership skills and qualities. Active Schools support this delivery with the coordination of further training and opportunities for the pupils to lead and deliver at primary schools, festivals and after school clubs.

Young Ambassadors - Young Ambassadors is a lottery funded programme designed to help develop young people develop as leaders in sport. Each year, Active Schools Coordinators support their secondary school to identify and mentor two pupils from their school to become Young Ambassadors. Their role is to help motivate and inspire other young people to get involved in sport in their school, local community and local clubs.
